Our Story

Who is Sunshine Foods?

Judy Liu, Founder of Sunshine Food Manufacturing Limited, came from China as an International student.

Her background was as an English teacher and logistics operator. She graduated from Unitec with a New Zealand Diploma in Business. One would say Judy was always headed for a career as a business owner.

Soon after their honeymoon, Judy and her husband, Shawn, opened a small restaurant in New Lynn. Judy’s mum, Rose, was the main Chef as she had the experience of running restaurants back in the family’s hometown, Qingdao. Rose believes a home recipe is always the best, and with that in mind she introduced her recipe: “pork, chive and prawn dumplings” into the restaurant. To Judy’s surprise, people from far and wide came to their restaurant to try her mum’s dumplings. There started a demand for fresh and frozen dumplings for customers to buy and take home.

Started suppling local Pak’n Save stores
Opened a new modern factory, specialising in frozen Asian food

Realizing the growth in demand, Rose encouraged Judy to take a brave step and develop their very our own dumpling factory. They sold their restaurant and then their house to commence their new business venture in a factory in Mt Roskill, where they manufactured frozen dumplings. This happened just 5 months after the birth of Judy’s first child in 2011. With the family support, they could continue supplying their dumplings to local Asian NZ supermarkets and restaurants like they were doing since 2008, but in much larger scale. As dumplings became a new trend in mainstream society, Judy then took a further brave step to supply local Pak’n Save stores in 2014.

We are grateful to Kiwis for being open to foreign culture and food as dumplings. I am proud that I brought my mum’s home recipe of dumplings to New Zealand.


Balancing a business that requires ongoing compliance, marketing and people management coupled with being a mum and raising 3 children is no easy task. However, Judy kept on and purchased new and bigger premises in 2019 and her family is excited to see what the future offers. As for Rose, she has retired from the life of business but she still makes amazing dumplings at home every week.
